Sue Smith

December 24, 1949 — September 3, 2023

Memorial services for Sue Smith, 73, of Kilgore will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Forest Home Baptist Church in Kilgore with Reverand Riley Pippen officiating. Mrs. Smith passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023, in Longview.

Sue was born December 24, 1949, in Hainesville, Texas to the late Henry C. Hasten and Wildred Thompson. She grew up in Hainesville with her two brothers and sister and attended school in Quitman, Texas.

Sue was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt, though most people knew her as Granny Sue. Throughout her life, she mainly stayed home as a housewife but did work for Kilgore ISD in the cafeteria for several years where she made many great memories and several lifelong friends, including her best friend, Aileen Sanchez.

Sue always had a passion for dogs. Throughout her life, she raised several as her own children: Bullet, Sugar Bugar, Oddie, and Daisy. She loved Daisy, her Boston Terrier, maybe even more than her own children and grandchildren.

She was a faithful frog collector, accumulating hundreds of frogs throughout her lifetime from her various travels and from friends and family as gifts. She loved to fish when she could, and everyone knew she loved to cook and feed anyone who would eat. Sue made the best fried chicken and potato salad.

Sue was reunited in passing with her father, Henry C. Hasten; her mother, Wildred Thompson; her husband, John H. Smith; and her brothers, Robert Wayne Hasten and James Henry Hasten.

Left to cherish her memory are sons: Wayne Smith of Kilgore, Texas; Ronnie Wright and wife, Lori, of Longview, Texas; Donnie Wright of Alba, Texas; and James Wright of Newsom, Texas; sister, Lydia Lynch of Gilmer, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 2 great- great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as many other loving family members and friends.
