March 13, 1948 — April 21, 2025

Longview

Janita Ann Barnes, a cherished member of the Longview community, passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on March 12, 1948, in Tyler, Texas, she was a beloved daughter, dedicated mother, and esteemed nursing professional who devoted her life to caring for others. Her faith and commitment to service were hallmarks of her character, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion.

Janita was preceded in death by her husband, Bubba Barnes, her high school sweetheart, and a source of great joy in her life. She was also predeceased by her parents, Bettie Schindler and Buell Brinson. Janita is survived by her loving family, including her daughters and their spouses: Kim and Mike Jenkins, Stacy Barnes, and Tammy and Billy Trichel. She took immense pride in her grandchildren—Chelsea and Steven Christopher, Courtney Jenkins, Connor Griffith, Camryn Griffith, Matthew and Carleigh Trichel, and Hannah Trichel—as well as her great-grandchildren, Beau and Bella Christopher. Janita also leaves behind her sisters, Brenda Skornik and Karen Bochow; her brother, David Brinson; her aunt, Diane Kleam; her cousin, Kristi Sampson; and many extended family members and dear friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.

Her educational journey began at Longview High School, after which she pursued her passion for healthcare. Janita earned her Licensed Vocational Nursing certification, later returning to Kilgore College to obtain her Associate Degree in Nursing (RN) in 1991. She was a proud member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Throughout her nursing career, Janita dedicated many years to the Diagnostic Clinic of Longview, playing a pivotal role in establishing its OB/GYN department alongside Dr. Price and Dr. Gor. After obtaining her sonography certification, she contributed significantly to the growth of the clinic’s obstetrics services, ultimately retiring as the supervisor of nursing services. Janita's ability to comfort and care for others defined her both in her professional life and as a nurturing presence for many family members and friends during their times of need.

A devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church since 1972, Janita was actively involved in her church community. She served in various capacities, including as a Sunday School teacher, Acteens leader, youth worker, and as a supportive deacon’s wife alongside her husband. Janita and Bubba welcomed everyone with open doors and open hearts, offering kindness and a helping hand to those in need.

In addition to her professional and church commitments, Janita was known for her exceptional culinary skills, particularly her famous pies. During her retirement, she volunteered her time in the church kitchen and continued her dedication to service by supporting Heartsway Hospice.
