Graveside services for Marie Ruth Hughes, 84 of Kilgore will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park, Texas with Rev. David Hampton officiating. Family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 Thursday evening at Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore. Mrs. Hughes passed away on Friday, January 1, 2021 in Kilgore.
Marie was born on June 18, 1936 in Wichita Falls, Texas to the late Arthur Ralph Mundt and Pearlie Mae Armitstead. She was the fifth of seven children and graduated from Iowa Park High School in Iowa Park, Texas. She has resided in Kilgore since 1963 and was a member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Hughes graduated from Kilgore College in 1990 and later graduated from University of Texas at Tyler in 1995. Marie was the Secretary of the Physical Plant for Kilgore College for 29 years until her retirement. Marie loved being active in her community and was a member of the Home Demonstration Club, Red Hat Society, Girl Scout Leader, 4 H Leader and coached her oldest son to victory as the first male to win the 4 H food show, she worked as the manager of the Kilgore High School Band Boosters Concession Stand and would work as the ticket greeter for the Kilgore College Football and Basketball teams. She had many hobbies such as playing keno, cooking, and knitting. Marie once was quoted in her Ranger Yearbook saying “I love knitting, that’s what I like to do. To see what you can make out of a ball of thread.” She was a loving and caring mother, sister, grandmother, and friend who will be missed by all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Carley Turnbow and Bernice Watson; brothers, Roy Mundt and David Mundt.
She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Johnson and husband Perry of Corpus Christi, sons, Jay Hughes of Kilgore and Larry Glen Hughes of Katy; brothers, Donald Mundt of Kansas and Ray Mundt of Wichita Falls, Texas; granddaughter, Misty Humphries and husband Brett Limonoff of Sacramento, California; sister-in-law, Marie Mundt as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
