Woodrow Allen Meyers Jr., better known as “Woodie”, was called to his final resting place on
February 20, 2022. Woodie was born to Ernestine and Woodrow Meyers Sr. on October 3,
1940. In addition, he was raised from an early age by his loving stepfather Evans Burton.
Woodie was a 1958 graduate of Longview high school where he was an all-state Lobo football
player. He excelled in football so much so that it led him to Texas A&M and East Texas State
University to play college ball. His on-field performance led him to be invited to join the Dallas
Cowboys training camp, but a pre-season injury ended his football career. Woodie’s Longview
high school days also brought him his “sweetheart” of more than 65 years, Loretta “Dolores”
Meyers one summer night at Lake Cherokee. Woodie and Dolores settled and had two children
in Seagoville, Texas. He spent 15 years as an assistant coach and later the head football coach
at Seagoville High School. When his coaching days were through, Woodie worked as a truancy
officer for Dallas ISD until he retired to Kilgore, Texas in 2000. Woodie was a Godly man and
was well known as an active member in his church and in his community. Woodie never met a
stranger and was adored by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Woodie enjoyed
his later days spending time with his family, fishing, or porch sitting at his little spot-on Lake
Cherokee.
Woodie is survived by his soul mate and wife, Dolores Meyers; his son Gary Meyers;
his son Keith Meyers and his wife Natalie; his grandchildren Justin Meyers, Alicia Bingham and
her husband Michael, Matt Spann, Kayla Rhea and her husband Travis, Jessi Meyers, and
Garrett Meyers; 8 great grandchildren. Woodie was an only child but had a dear friend that he
considered to be like a brother, Carol Lokey. There are numerous other friends and family members
who loved and truly cherished Woodie.
